Sunday 27 February 2022, CinePunked presents In the Grip of Hammer 2: Beyond Hammer Glamour.
By popular request, following on from last month’s In The Grip of Hammer livestream, Robert J.E. Simpson and David L Rattigan are presenting the second in what is now conceived as an ongoing occasional series of conversations about Hammer Films. This time they are joined by special guest Dr Penny Goodman as they look at the way sex appeal is exploited in Hammer’s gothic horrors in Beyond Hammer Glamour. For this instalment, attention is firmly on Hammer’s early vampire films.
Robert JE Simpson is a film historian and cultural commentator, previously worked as the official archivist for Hammer Films, and is currently writing a book about the early history of Hammer’s sister company Exclusive Films. He tweets about the project and Hammer at @exclusivephd.
David L Rattigan is a freelance writer and editor with a Hammer horror obsession, and long history of public engagement on the subject. For the last year he has been tweeting about his love for the films over at @hammergothic.
Dr Penny Goodman is an Associate Professor in Classics, based in Leeds University. She’s been given the moniker ‘Queen of Hammer subtext’ by David on account of her insights on Twitter where she is @pjgoodman.
Robert and David have a long-standing working relationship and have collaborated on a number of magazine, book and podcast projects.
In The Grip of Hammer is an occasional series exploring the history of British film company Hammer Films, perhaps best known for their gothic horror films. It is part of CinePunked’s 2022 coverage of fandoms and fan culture.
The conversation will be live-streamed at 8pm GMT on 27 February 2022 via the CinePunked YouTube channel, and will include an audience Q&A.
