As part of the 2019 Belfast Book Festival CinePunked is holding a debate on censorship, inspired by Rad Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, and a public book burning, and we’d like you to get involved, wherever you are.
The event will include a live panel discussion. Attendees to the burning will each be invited to bring along a book for the fire, and will be asked to briefly share their reasons for burning their chosen title. We will be filming, photographing (and hopefully streaming) the process. So you’ll be asked to tell us who you are, what your book is, and why you are burning it, before it is added to the pile. We’ll be adding a section to cinepunked.com recording the event and the choice of titles and reasons as a record of the process.
But, we know it will not be possible for everyone to attend, and we don’t want anyone to miss out. So if you can’t be in attendance, but would like to participate, we will invite you to send your own books to us for burning on your behalf.
Please include:
- Your name
- Your age
- Your address
- The name and author of your chosen book
- Why you wish to burn it
Tickets for the live event and panel discussion are £10. Distance participation costs £5 per book.

On payment and receipt of details, you will be given a mailing address to send your book to.
You are responsible for payment of p&p.
In return, we will send you an image of your book at the burning. Post-burning, we will add details of your contribution to the website.
Terms and Conditions
Payment is final. If you decide not to forward your book to us, or you book does not reach us in time for the burning, money is non-refundable.
All books should reach us by 12pm (GMT) on Tuesday 11 June 2019.
All submissions will be pre-vetted. We reserve the right to withhold titles from burning. We will not proceed with burning a title if we suspect they have been stolen (no library books please!). No sacred texts will be permitted (no Bibles, Qurans etc). CinePunked takes our responsibilities seriously, and we will act accordingly if we suspect we are being used to facilitate hate speech or for political means.
Publication of the burning online and in other media will include contributors names (please indicate if you wish to use a pseudonym), and town of residence, and your statement of choice. We reserve the right to edit contributions for reasons of space or legibility. By submitting you confirm that you are happy for us to publish your words and grant CinePunked non-exclusive worldwide permission to use and sub-license your contribution in all media.
Your personal data will be kept for the purposes of administering this event, and for notifications regarding the publication of your submissions only. They will not be shared with any third party participants or vendors, and will not be made available outside of CinePunked.
In the event that we have more submissions than time for the Burn All Books event, CinePunked will endeavour to host a burning for outstanding contributions, which will be recorded and logged in the same way as the event on 12th June 2019. This event will take place within one calendar month of the Book Festival burning.
We may add to these conditions at any time. Correct as of 16 April 2019.
