The hugely influential #films #TheCabinetofDrCaligari turns 100 this week. #ConradVeidt plays Cesare, a #somnambulist, who is being used by a mad scientist to commit murder. Regarded by many as the pinnacle of the #germanexpressionist movement, it's stylings were drawn upon by #filmnoir and #horror genre filmmakers. Released just as restrictions on German films were being lifted following WW1, #Caligari was able to find a significant international audience and remains essential viewing. British born actor and producer Michael Medwin has died at the age of 96. Born in London in 1923, Medwin's long career saw him hit stage and screen, both small and large, with a particular penchant for comedy. One of the stars of TV's The Army Game, Shoestring and sitcom Colin's Sandwich, Medwin was instantly recognisable, filling the screen with warmth. Alongside the late Albert Finney he set up the company Memorial Enterprises and diversified into the role of producer. As producer he was responsible for the Lindsay Anderson classics If... O Lucky Man! and Horror Hospital. His career saw him take roles in Bond films, Chaplin's Countess from Hong Kong and a number of early Hammer films. I interviewed him some years ago about his work on those early Hammer pictures and recall asking him about whether the experiences on low-budget economic films influenced his own approach as a producer. On this day in history... 22 February 1992 and a bizarre meeting of icons. British #comedy #actor #BennyHill is in the Royal Brompton Heart and Lung #hospital in Chelsea recovering following a heart attack, when fan, sometime actor and #singer @michaeljackson pops in to see him. MJ is apparently a huge Hill fan, with a room full of videotapes of the British performer at his Neverland home. They spend nearly an hour together and even talk of Hill guesting in one of MJ's music videos. Hill would be dead just two months later on 18 April 1992. Controversy surrounded both men, Hill's comedy was viewed as increasingly misogynistic and outdated in the 80s and 90s, leaving Hill in a depressed state. MJ's troubles are best left for another thread.
