We held the latest of our Masters of Cinema workshops today - a look at the #cinema of #WesAnderson - visionary director and probable #auteur. Thanks to all who came. We'll be announcing our first 2019 workshops this week, and we've one on Its A Wonderful Life on Tues 17 Dec at @crescentartscentre Belfast. Let's enjoy the #pastelpalette and #symmetry in Anderson's films... Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson, 2012) #MoonriseKingdom #film #adventure #americana #binoculars #KaraHayward #lighthouse
Released 25 years ago this month is #MiracleOn34thStreet starring #RichardAttenborough and 6 year old #MaraWilson. A #remake of the 1947 original its a heartwarming seasonal favourite that asks questions about relationships and faith, adapted and directed by #JohnHughes. Hard to believe this is now a quarter of a century old! What's your #Christmasfilm of choice? Miracle on 34th Street (John Hughes, 1994) #christmas #comedy #american #santa #hollywood #cinema
It's #DoctorWhoDay - the #scifi classic first aired on British TV 23 November 1963 and continues to run today. While the first incumbent of the #TARDIS on TV was William Hartnell, when it came to the big screen it was actor #PeterCushing that took the part. Transformed from an alien traveller to a dotty scientist, the two films were cult favourites in the 60s offering CinemaScope (well #Techniscope) and #Daleks in colour! He's joined in the first feature by two granddaughters (#JennieLinden as Barbara and #RobertaTovey as Susan) and #RoyCastle as Barbara's boyfriend Ian - the comic relief. Here's an original colourised lobby card for the first film. Dr. Who & The Daleks (Gordon Flemying, 1965) #doctorwho #space #timetravel #skaro #policebox #drwho #drwhoandthedaleks
Happy 79th birthday to visionary #director #TerryGilliam. Born 22 Nov 1940 in Minneapolis, USA, and educated in Los Angeles, Gilliam was an adept #cartoonist and #illustrator before moving to Britain in the 1960s. There his animations brightened up films, TV show #DoNotAdjustYourSet and of course #MontyPythonsFlyingCircus. Gilliam took on occasional acting parts and his first stab at co-directing, with Terry Jones on Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Gilliam's fantastical worlds owe debt to surrealism, baroque and have been described as #magicalrealism. His body of work includes Brazil, 12 Monkeys, The Fisher King and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, and is never less than interesting, frequently brilliant. Pictured: Gilliam in a camero role in #JupiterAscending as the Seal and Signet Minister - a film that takes its cues from Gilliam's Brazil. Jupiter Ascending (The Wachowskis, 2015) #scifi #fantasy #gilliamesque #actor #filmmaker #american #british #montypython #picoftheday
Happy #InternationalManofMystery Day! We've got that right, haven't we? #MikeMyers' #satirical swipe at 60s culture and the #spymovie (especially #JamesBond) originated in the creation of faux-60s group #MingTea that Myers was part of following his run on #SaturdayNightLive. The #AustinPowers character was strong enough to develop a film around. A homage to Myers' father and the #British cultural influences on his life - Peter Sellers, The Goodies, James Bond, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore... There's nods to the Matt Helm films with Dean Martin, David Niven's Bond outing - Casino Royale, and huge swathes of Peter Wyngarde's Jason King. The American releases were cut heavily for use of sexual imagery and innuendo. Which rather defeats the point. Released in 1997 and followed by two sequels, a fourth installment has been teased since 2002. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (Jay Roach, 1997) #carnabystreet #retro #comedy #cultclassic #shagadelic #spy #internationalmensday #dance
It's Brad Majors, Magenta and the Criminologist lined up to chat about #TheRockyHorrorPictureShow last night at @accidentaltheatre. For the first of our new #CinePunkedLabs experiments we did a live streaming commentary record via Facebook and Twitch at Accidental's request. Some Gremlins in the work during the early part of the broadcast, but most of the video has survived so far on our Facebook! We've got a back up audio too, which we'll issue soon so you can listen to us chat alongside the film. Thanks to anyone that tuned in, and to #accidentaltheatre for the invite. We'll be back with them very soon. The CinePunked Labs is our sandbox - projects and events that test methodologies, new ideas, and dry runs for bigger pieces. They're how we explore new audience engagements.
