Voyage of the Banned : Frankenstein
Presented by Accidental Theatre & CinePunked

Step into the dark and unsettling world of James Whale’s Frankenstein (1931), a landmark in horror cinema, as we kick off our Voyage of the Banned season with a film that has captivated audiences for nearly a century. When it first premiered, this adaptation of Mary Shelley’s iconic novel stirred controversy for its chilling portrayal of science gone awry, the monstrous creation of Dr. Frankenstein, and the taboo of playing god. Despite its initial backlash, Frankenstein remains one of the most influential and celebrated films in the history of horror.
Join us at the Never Seen It Film Club for an immersive, phone-free screening in Accidental Theatre’s main space—where we’ll throw out the seating conventions and get comfortable in a true celebration of classic cinema. This is more than just a movie night; it’s an opportunity to dive deep into a film that was once deemed too shocking for its time, and connect with fellow film buffs in a dynamic, community-driven setting.
The Voyage of the Banned season is curated by CinePunked, with Accidental operating and hosting the events. The films picked have all been subject to censorship or banning at some point in the UK. Frankenstein leads the season as while it was available to viewers across much of the UK, it was originally banned from screens in Belfast in the 1930s. The screening will be followed by an interactive discussion led by CinePunked’s Robert JE Simpson and Neil Sedgewick where we’ll explore the themes of morality, science, and censorship that still resonate today. A truly unique experience for anyone passionate about film history and the impact of controversial cinema. The discussion will be recorded.
Date: Sunday 26th Janurary, 6pm GMT
Location: Accidental Theatre
Approx duration of event including screening and discussion: 2.5 hrs.
