SLEEVE NOTES

Series 3, episode 2. (Or alternatively, episode 24). Recorded back to back with our Jingle All The Way episode, this is a look at a firm family favourite – Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Fuelled by good coffee, hospitality and a recording in the bag, the team was in excellent spirits when it came to recording this one and I think it shows. While there’s some talk both of Gene Wilder’s original, and Johnny Depp’s reimagining of the Willy Wonka character, as the pod goes on, this one takes some unexpected turns into the darker subtexts of both film and novel and has us itching to do more on it.

Listening back lately, I’ve found some of the shows a little dry, so I’ve cut in a few appropriate clips from both films (and a short Marilyn Manson piece) along the way. I’m always wary about doing this because the laws of fair use are complicated, unclear, and differ depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on. The podcast (certainly at this stage) isn’t a commercial venture, and the clips are used in context to illustrate the conversation and hopefully enhance the arguments. Should anyone have any objection I’d ask them to drop us a line to discuss.

Recorded in Holywood on 14 December 2019. Engineered and mixed by Ben using his portable studio. Final edit by me and uploaded on 2 January 2020.
